PRESS RELEASE: COMMEMORATION OF 16TH ANNIVERSARY OF MAY 9, STADIUM DISASTER

Today marks the 16th anniversary of the tragic disaster that occurred at the Accra Sports Stadium leading to the death of 126 football fans after a Ghana Premier League match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

On the commemoration of this sad day which marred the beauty of our game, the PLB once again sympathizes with the bereaved families and not to remind them of their pain.

It is our belief that soccer fans and all Ghanaians have learnt useful lessons from that tragic day.

However, the board is of the opinion that there is a need to continue to educate our various supporters to apply the principles of sportsmanship and the ethics of the game.
We also urge all stakeholders, particularly, the security agencies to provide effective security at all football matches to ensure the safety of everybody involved in the game.

There is the need to improve and maintain sports infrastructure, effective security and safety measures across the country to prevent any re-ccurrence of such a  disaster.
At its meeting on Tuesday May 9, the PLB observed a minute silence in honor of the departed souls.

In line with this, all premier league clubs are directed to observe a minute silence before kick off at the various match venues this weekend.

NEVER AGAIN!
