The five-week old Glo Premier League has recorded its first coaching casualty after Hearts of Oak's C.K. Akonnor got the sack.

Akonnor's contract was terminated by the Phobians on Wednesday following a board meeting in Accra to review the club's poor run in the competition.

The former Ghana captain's position had become untenable after three successive losses in the league which has seen the Phobians drop to 13th on the standings.

He kicked off the campaign, drawing with Tema Youth and followed it up with a thumping 5-2 victory over New Edubiase but the last three outings against Dwarfs, Wa All Stars and Berekum Chelsea, which ended in defeats, cost him dearly and his job.

Akunnor joined Hearts of Oak midstream of last season in March 2011 after the club relieved Serbian coach Nebojsa Vucicevic off his duties.

He succeeded in guiding the club to third as rivals, Asante Kotoko clinched the title.

But the weight of expectation was always going to be high for Akonnor the season after.

Despite enjoying the benefit of a full preseason with the Phobians after making changes to the playing squad, his team flattered to deceive, leaving the management to call time on his 19-month reign in charge of Hearts of Oak.

Akonnor's assistant Ben Adjei, a former defender with the club will take charge of the team until a substantive coach is appointed.
