Rarely could AshantiGold have looked to overhaul rivals, Asante Kotoko to the top in the premiership and aim for the FA Cup three months ago.
However, events have changed with Yaw Acheampong hoping to overtake rivals, Kotoko at the summit and win the FA Cup to complete a double.
A change in technical direction saw the reigns handed to ex-Ghana and club player Acheampong and since the start of the second round in the league, the Miners have made huge strides.
From below mid-table campaigners under Croat Zdravko Logarusic, the Miners have moved second on the standings with Acheampong, acting coach, guiding them to six consecutive wins in the second round.
“I think I have done well so far and I am ready to take full responsibility. Winning six straight games is good and I feel good about it," Acheampong said as he pushed to be confirmed in a substantive position.
“I am ready to continue in a full time role.”
Placed second and 10 points off the top with nine games left, they are through to the last 16 of the FA Cup and the AshantiGold coach is not ruling out titles as he targets a good finish in both competitions.
“We are in second position and chasing the league. But we have the FA Cup too to look to. We are still in the FA Cup and would want to win it.”
“We have an equal chance of winning and we have to continue working hard in both competitions. We will see how it goes but I am keeping the secret to our success to myself,” said the coach, an ex-Ghana international who was also on the books of Spanish side, Real Sociedad during his playing career.
It looked all gloom last year but the response has been astonishing under Yaw Acheampong as the Miners, three-time league champions keep their league title challenge alive and target the FA Cup too.
