John Mensah has lead Ghana to three successive wins at the 2008 African Cup of Nations and helped secure the Black Stars a quarter-finals place.

The defender, who took over the captain’s armband in the absence of Stephen Appiah – ruled of the tournament because of injury – has displayed true leadership qualities and that has really impressed team coach, Claude Le Roy.

Claude Le Roy admits Mensah has demonstrated good qualities in leading the Black Stars.

“He has handled his role very well as captain,” Le Roy said.

“I am so lucky to have him as captain because in addition to being a good leader, he is one of the best defenders in the world.”

John Mensah, is noted for his calmness but says he approaches the game differently and also adds that he communicates well with his colleagues.

“Everyone knows I am quiet and laid back, but on the field I would break my back for this country. I do the talking both verbally and in terms of the way I play.”

“I do take charge in this team but I am not lording over anyone. We are adults so it is important that I reason with people rather than impose.”
