Dr. Gifty Oware Mensah, Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association, is advocating for parents to allow their girl children to play football and pursue their dreams. She emphasizes that football is for everyone, regardless of gender, religion, or ethnicity.
She was speaking at the FIFA Women’s football campaign at the Opoku Ware School in Kumasi.
‘’I think we have come a long way as people especially in Ghana where we have seen great women play football and still achieve a lot’’ Dr. Gifty Oware-Mensah said.
‘’So we are pleading with all parents to appreciate that football is not just for men, football is not just for one religion or one ethnic group. Football is for all of us, no matter where the child comes from the child can still play football whether in the hijab, in a long dress anything that the child wears. They can go to school and still enjoy playing football because education is very important’’.
‘’It is about making sure the woman has space in the sports industry just as we’ve been able to. It’s our parents that allowed us to get this space and they can also allow their children to get in’’.
‘’So, parents should be safe, parents should not think about what will happen to their girls, whether they can grow to become mothers, whether they can grow to become aunties of people. We are mothers and Aunties and we have played football before, we are here to serve as administrative people and then all the girls can do it. The girl child can have access to everything because FIFA says the future of Football is Woman’’.
‘’Ghana is no different as we believe in supporting and nurturing girls to become great footballers in the future’’ she added.
The FIFA Women's Football campaign aims to increase girls' participation in football at the grassroots level and promote the Women's Football Strategy of the Ghana Football Association.
