The past year saw Ghana chalk some success in sports but arguably, the sport - football left a lasting impression on the minds of all especially with Ghana’s World Cup debut.
And the sterling performance of the Black Stars at the World Cup that saw them reach the round of 16 continues to be recognized as the highest point of Ghana sports in the past year.
Twenty-three sporting personalities from various disciplines would handed awards during the ceremony in March.
Football has topped the awards categories of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana for the past year.
No wonder the duo of team captain Stephen Appiah and his deputy, John Mensah have been nominated for the Sports Personality of the Year Award by Sports Writers Association of Ghana - SWAG.
But the two Stars would have to shrug off competition from Ghana’s long jumper, Ignatius Gaisah who is also in the reckoning for the highest award by SWAG.
The awards ceremony which comes off later in the year also has other footballers gunning for other award categories.
For the male Footballer of the Year category, Stephen Appiah and John Mensah are again in the frame for this award alongside, Michael Essien.
The male senior national team, the Black Stars have been selected for Team of the Year.
Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Kingson and John Mensah have both been nominated for Special Meritorious awards for their special contributions to the success of the national team.
Black Queens midfielder, Sheila Okine guns for the Women’s Footballer of the Year award.
The Discovery of the Year goes to 17 year-old Black Queens sensation, Anita Amankwah.
The Promising Footballer award would be conferred on AshantiGold midfielder, Alhaji Sanie.
A statement released by SWAG said members of the general public shall contribute to 30% of the voting process via SMS text with the remaining 70 to been decided by the association before the awards night.
