The present generation of Ghana's U-17 women's team have made giant strides after reaching the semi-finals of the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
And that feat is the first by a Ghanaian women’s team to reach the last four of a FIFA competition and the first African side to appear in the last four of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Ahead of the semi-final meeting against France on Tuesday, Black Maidens captain Priscilla Okyere is relishing the prospect of securing a final berth in their third attempt at the competition.
“This is what we came for, to make history,” said captain Okyere.
“And we’ve made it,” she added. “We’ve made history but we want more. We’re hoping to beat France, reach the final and take this World Cup home with us.”
After failed attempts to go past the group phase in their two previous FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup appearances, the Black Maidens are readying for the big clash against Les Bleuettes as they contest their very first semi-finals in the competition.
Okyere hopes Ghana can be just as solid when they take on the French as the Black Maidens are a game away from the finals of the on-going competition in Azerbaijan.
“Of the teams left in the World Cup, Ghana is one of the best in terms of defending,” she said.
“That was what took us to victory in the quarter-finals, and now we’ve got our sights set on knocking out France.”
