KGL U17 Colts: Western Region secure Final spot with comeback win over Northern Region

Western Region staged a dramatic 3-1 comeback win over Northern in the semi-finals of the 2024 KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship on Tuesday August 6, 2024.

Coach Cosmos Amankwah's side looked to be heading for defeat in the semi-final at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram after talented Musa Ahmed Sharafadeen put Northern Region ahead with a superb volley in the 44th minute.

But Benedict Afful pulled parity for Western Region with a fantastic drive just outside the box to level matters with the last kick of the ball in the first half.

Midfielder Clement Gyapong added the second in the 73rd minute before Stephen Cobbinah scored the third seven minute to regulation time to complete the remarkable comeback success at the GFA technical centre.

Western Region have secured qualification to the finals of the talent identification Championship for the first time after a highly competitive match against Northern Region.

Forward Benedict Afful was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) after he put up a decent shift at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram.

They will now face the winner of the second semi-final contest between Eastern Region and Volta Region, which kicks off 14:00GMT (2pm local time).

The championship serves as a platform for showcasing emerging players and fostering their development. This U-17 tournament is a key component of the GFA’s broader strategy of talent identification and nurturing of young football talents across Ghana.

The matches of the Championships are being telecast live to various platforms including the GFA Official Facebook page and Max TV.

The KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship, launched in 2021, has been an avenue for talent discovery for clubs, particularly Premier and Division One League clubs, with several players being beneficiaries of the esteemed competition.

The ten Regional Football Associations have selected the best U17 players from their Colts competitions to represent their regions in the Championship which is aimed at identifying, training and developing young talents for the national youth teams.
