Malta Guinness WPL: Sekondi decides - Hasaacas Ladies battle Faith Ladies for top spot
The winner of the Southern zone will be determined on Saturday when Hasaacas Ladies lock horns with Faith Ladies at the Sekondi Gyandu Park on Sunday. The fixture headlines the matches in the Southern zone as the two battle for the top spot after a keenly competitive season. Two points separate them with Faith Ladies two points short of the former champions who are on 36 points after 17 Premier League matches. Hasaacas Ladies need a draw to qualify whiles Faith Ladies need to work off their socks to claim a vital away win to inflict on their host their first home loss of the season. The dreaded Sekondi Gyandu Park will decide but there are other games to look ahead to as two other clubs fight for a top four finish.
The preview can be found below:
POLICE LADIES VRS ARMY LADIES
There’ll be a service derby at the Achimota school park where Police Ladies face Army Ladies on Saturday. This will be the third meeting between the two security services since 2022, of which Army Ladies have won two out of the three encounters. Police Ladies will be hoping to finish on a good note as they currently occupy the 6th position after garnering 21 points from 17 matches. Army Ladies on the other hand have had a tremendous run this season to be third on the League log with 32 points.
THUNDERQUEENS VRS ESSIAM SOCRATES LADIES
Thunder Queens will lock horns with Mankessim-based, Essiam Socrates in the final round of matches at the Legon Presec School Park. The visitors per previous statistics have an upper hand over the home side ahead of the clash and would aim to record a second successive victory over their opponent. Thunder Queens, who lost to Berry Ladies by four unanswered goals last weekend, would also come hard to seek redemption to crown the season – having displayed a lackluster performance all season. They occupy the ninth position with 14 points – 9 points ahead of Ridge City who have been winless this season. Coming into their first season with less experience, debutants, Essiam Socrates had proved beyond doubt to be one of the best teams after an impressive campaign. Thunder Queens would come into the game as a side looking to strike down their opponent – as they search for a fourth Premier League win, whereas the Mankessim-based side would also come into the game hoping for their sixth victory.
RIDGE CITY VRS BERRY LADIES
Ridge City are the only side not to pick a win in the 2022/2023 season having endured a frustrating maiden campaign in the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League. The relegated club host Berry Ladies in the last fixture of the season at the Madina Astro turf. Berry Ladies are the most improved and consistent side in the second round of the League having moved from the 7th spot to 4th place - with 27 points. Debutants Ridge City who are already relegated will hope to end the season on a winning note against inform Berry Ladies.
SOCCER INTELLECTUALS VRS LADYSTRIKERS
The two struggling teams will engage each other in a Regional derby at the Ajumako Eduyaw Assasan Park to climax the season. Soccer Intellectuals succumbed 3-0 at the same venue to Army Ladies in the penultimate fixture and would want to bounce back against their sworn-rivals to end the season on a strong note. Lady Strikers secured a relegation survival 1-1 draw with league leaders Hasaacas Ladies at Cape Coast last week. Lady Strikers stole a late winner when the two sides met in the first round of the season. But for the bragging right, not much is at stake in this game as both teams are safe from the relegation fight.
HASAACAS LADIES VRS FAITH LADIES
Hasaacas Ladies remain the only team with an unbeaten home record in the Southern Zone and will be waiting to add Faith Ladies to the list of casualties in the battle for supremacy. Faith Ladies won the reverse fixture 2-0 but the Doo Ladies are upbeat about maintaining their home dominance as well as the top spot in the Zone. Both teams have had a good second round although they both lost on Matchday 10 of the season. The encounter will be the last home game for Hasaacas Ladies as a win for Faith Ladies will secure them the top spot whilst a draw will be enough to send Hasaacas Ladies through. The match which is scheduled for 3pm kickoff at the Gyandu Park in Sekondi will be broadcast live on Max TV.
