Past pain fuels Appiah's ambition

Stephen Appiah was bullish today as he pointedly claimed that he was keen to deliver a sterling performance for Ghana in the final qualifying game of the 2010 Nations Cup and World Cup campaign.

The new Bologna signing will lead Ghana into Sunday's game against Mali on home soil at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

The captain's inability to play club football for close to two seasons after ending his contract with Fenerbache following an injury left him open for criticisms.

Despite the tie having little value for Ghana who have already qualified for both competitions next year, Appiah insists he has something to prove but bares no grudges.

"I have lots to prove. I endured a terrible time when I was out of job. Lots of things were said but some kept faith with me," Stephen Appiah said on Friday at Ghana's camp in Kumasi.

Appiah's relentless desire to keep his head up despite criticism in the past has fueled his ambition to give a good account of himself.

The midfielder has taken criticisms he has faced - both for his on-field and off-field activities as part of the job.

"In those hard times, I expected some compassion but though I had it from some, the attacks were too much. But that's the job we find ourselves in.

"You get praised sometime and the next moment, you are given a real bashing. It was tough.

"But it's all in the past now. I hold nothing against anyone. I guess everyone wanted the best for the team just like me.

"However, I have another opportunity to prove to myself, colleagues and critics why the coaches kept faith with me," he said.

Appiah said he felt optimistic about his own form though he expects a tough game.

"Once I signed up for Bologna, the pressure was off. I now expect to play with much confidence and not try too hard which sometimes can affect once game and the team in general.

"Mali would always be a tough game but we know we have the fans behind us and would give off our best.

"It's the last qualifier and we need to round up in style."
