WPL Preview: Southern Zone – Immigration face Intellectuals, Hasaacas Ladies face off with leaders Berry Ladies, Lady strikers host Police Ladies
Southern Zone leaders, Berry Ladies will make a trip to Sekondi to play Hasaacas Ladies. This game is undoubtedly the biggest game of the weekend as the two teams occupy the first two spots on the League log. Only one point separates them following a 2-1 away win for Hasaacas Ladies over Police Ladies and Berry Ladies' 2-2 draw against Lady Strikers. Here is a preview of match 7 for the southern Zone.
Immigration Ladies vs Soccer Intellectuals
The drought is finally over, Immigration Ladies won on Saturday against Sea Lions, a victory the team will relish, approaching match day 7. This crucial win propelled the team to the 6th place on the league log with 5 points. This weekend, the service ladies will play at home against a team that is familiar with the McDan park, a place they recorded their very first away victory this season. Over the weekend, Deborah Anderson and Jennifer Adjei Mensah secured a 2-0 win for the team, a win that can inspire them ahead of the game against Immigration Ladies. Linda Addai, scored a 63rd minute goal to give Soccer Intellectuals all 3 points in last season’s encounter.
Thunder Queens FC vs Sea Lions FC
Neither Thunder Queens or Sea Lions have really impressed, as both teams sit in the last two spots at the bottom of the table with 2 points and 1 point respectively after 6 matches. Cecelia Hagan, Theresah Cobbinah and Elizabeth Owusua could prove crucial for Sea Lions at a time when the team is struggling for inspiration. Coach of the side, Maapa Inkoom believes lack of motivation is the reason for their impecunious performances this season. The experienced trainer, however believes they have the quality to avoid relegation. Thunder Queens also had it tough, going down with 2 goals at the Adu Yaw -Assasan Park in Ajumako, despite putting up an impressive display in the second half. Both teams shared the spoils last season in 1-1 stalemate where, Ramsha Adams and Dorcas Kumiwaa scored for Thunder Queens and Sea Lions respectively. Both teams are yet to win a game and this fixture could go either way.
Hasaacas Ladies vs Berry Ladies
The game will pit the two best teams in the Zone against each other. Hasaacas Ladies have found their stride after a confidence boosting 2-1 win over Police Ladies at the La town park. Striker, Milot Abena Pokua scored a brace as the team moved to the second spot on the zonal League table with 13 points. Yusif Basigi believes the game with Berry Ladies will be one of the title deciders in the season. Berry Ladies' perfect start to the 2020/21 season, a five-game winning run came to an end last week following a 2-2 draw against Lady Strikers at the Zuka park in Madina. They have no doubt established themselves as legitimate title contenders with 5 wins, one draw, picking 16 points from a possible 18. Striker, Felicity Asante had a chance to win the game for her side but the January player of the month, blasted wide a second half penalty. Their last outing at the Tema Sports stadium ended 2-1 in favor of Hasaacas Ladies with Doris Boaduwaa and Milot Abena Pokua getting the 2 goals. Monica Addai got the consolation for Berry Ladies then (Halifax Ladies). This match means a lot to both teams but Hasaacas Ladies looks quite stronger as play at their favourite Gyandu park in Sekondi.
Lady Strikers vs Police Ladies
Lady Strikers might not be very good defensively but have a crack going forward, scoring 14 goals in their last 6 matches and conceding 9 goals in the process. Suzzy Dede Teye is in the best of form and is at par with striker Felicity Asante of Berry Ladies at the top of the scorers’ chart. Coach Rashid Iddi believes the zone is wide open looking at the points between the top four teams and is working towards the ultimate. Police Ladies have had a topsy-turvy season, something unlike the side and coach Oswald Frank Sam and his technical men are putting in effort to make things right. They recorded a painful 2-1 loss to Hasaacas Ladies over the weekend and aim to get back on track with a win against Lady Strikers. A depleted Lady Strikers’ side succumbed to a 4-1 defeat to Police Ladies on match day 1 last season.
