A last-gasp goal which proved to be the match winner has put Ghana back in contention for a place at the first ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Ghana posted a 1-0 win over Nigeria today at the El-Wak Stadium to keep their hopes alive of reaching the finals of the World Cup.
Elizabeth Addo scored the match winner for the Black Maidens in the 94th minute to condemn the Nigerians as Ghana recorded their first win in the qualifying campaign.
Ghana thus go on 3 points behind Cameroon who have 4 points as both nations trail Nigeria, who lead the three-nation table by 6 points.
The Black Maidens lost two successive games in the qualifying campaign with the first being an away defeat to Nigeria which ended 4-2 a fortnight ago before falling to Cameroon 2-1.
But with the game against the Nigerians at home pointing to a draw, Elizabeth Addo headed in from close range in a game which the Ghanaians hit the post twice while their opponents also had a goal attempt coming off the post.
Ghana would need to pick all three points in their last qualifying game away to Cameroon to pick one of the two qualifying places available to Africa for the World Cup to be hosted by New Zealand.
The World Cup will be hosted by New Zealand from October 30 to November 16, 2008.
