Ghana has become the second African side to qualify for the first ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup later in October, after an away win over Cameroon booked their place.
The Black Maidens braced the odds to post an impressive 2-1 win over Cameroon in the reverse fixture in Yaounde, Saturday afternoon, in the ultimate qualifier. Ghana lost the first leg by a similar score line in Accra in June.
Ghana, thus joins Nigeria, who have already qualified as the continent’s representatives for the World Cup to be hosted by New Zealand.
Prior to today’s decider, the Black Maidens were bottom of the three team group with three points but finish on six points on the final day of qualifiers, a point behind Nigeria, who finished top by seven points.
After suffering two successive defeats in the qualifying campaign, the Black Maidens picked up the pieces last weekend when they beat Nigeria 1-0 at home to stay in contention for place at the World Cup before wrapping up a spot in New Zealand with victory over Cameroon.
Ghana would play in Group B at the World Cup where the Black Maidens join Germany, Korea DPR and a CONCACAF team.
The Black Maidens would open their Group B campaign against Korea DPR in Christchurch on October 29 before taking on Germany three days later with the final group match against the CONCACAF representative.
The World Cup will be hosted by New Zealand from October 28 to November 16, 2008.
