Basake Holy Stars held their nerve to beat Medeama SC 5-4 on penalties to win the Apinto Cup after an enthralling game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa on Saturday August 31, 2024.

Francis Oteng opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half before Diawise Taylor pulled parity for the Mauve and Yellow in the second half to send the two teams into the lottery of a penalty shootout.

Medeama, as expected, dominated possession from the start, but it was Basake Holy Stars that showed grit and determination to steal victory at the brand new TnA Stadium.

The first eight spot-kicks were all converted but winger Derrick Fordjour struck his penalty against the side post to hand victory to Basake Holy Stars.

The match served as a prelude to the Champion of Champions clash between FC Samartex 1996 and Nsoatreman FC, scheduled to kickoff at 18:00GMT (6pm local time).

The Champion of Champions clash is set to usher in the new football season, pitting the league champions against the FA Cup holders in a contest that promises to be a fitting celebration of Ghanaian football.

Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, who doubles as Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. George Mireku Duker presented the trophy to the winning team.  He was supported by GFA Executive Council members Samuel Aboabire and Eugene Noel Nobel.

GFA Vice-President Mark Addo, Black Stars coach Otto Addo and his backroom staff comprising Assistant coach John Painstil and Goalkeepers trainer, Fatau Dauda were also in attendance.
