KGL U17 Colts: Volta Region maintain perfect start with win over Ashanti; Bono Ahafo on rampage

Aglago George and Prince Asiedu were on targets as Volta Region maintained their perfect start to the 2024 KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship with a 2-0 win over Ashanti Region on Sunday July 28, 2024.

Volta Region scored a goal in each half to secure the vital win to extend their lead at the top of Group A.

Aglago George, who has now scored two goals in two matches, opened the scoring with a breath-taking solo run in the 17th minute before Prince Asiedu added the second with four minutes left on the clock.

The epic match provided plenty of exciting moments at the GFA Technical Centre,  Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram.

Volta Region were forced into more defensive work in the second period following a dominant display from Ashanti Region but Farouk Salifu's boys maintained their calmness to protect their perfect start in the talent identification Championship.

Ashanti Region had much of the possession in the second period and forced hugely talented Bless Amedorme into too many meaningful saves.

Goalkeeper Bless Amedorme, who impressed heavily with remarkable saves throughout the highly entertaining match, deservedly won the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

In the second Group A match, Bono Ahafo Region marked their resurgence in style by hammering Northern Region 4-0 to deliver  a perfect response to their opening defeat against Ashanti Region.

Two goals in each half secured the morale boosting victory for the Bono Ahafo team at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.

Young defender Manan Abdul Malik  put Bono Ahafo infront with a powerful header as early as the 5th before being sent off in the 79th minute.

Amponsah Derick wrapped up a superb display with an unstoppable drive from inside the box to give Bono Ahafo a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute before Osei Amankwah Prince grabbed a second half brace to complete the rout.

Two-goal hero Osei Amankwah Prince was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The Championship fixtures on Monday July 28, 2024, will see Eastern Region battling it out with Greater Accra Region at 10am local time before Upper East Region take on Western Region at 14:00GMT (2pm local time).

The matches of the Championships is being telecast live to various platforms including the GFA App, GFA Official Facebook page and Max TV.

The KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship, launched in 2021, has been an avenue for talent discovery for clubs, particularly Premier and Division One League clubs, with several players being beneficiaries of the esteemed competition.

The ten Regional Football Associations have selected the best U17 players from their Colts competitions to represent their regions in this year's edition.

The 12-day Championship, aimed at identifying, training and developing young talented teenagers for Ghana's youth national teams, runs till Thursday August 8, 2024.
