Noted for their positive criticisms when results have gone against Ghana, the turn out and support from fans during the Black Stars' World Cup qualifier against Sudan left a lasting impression on Sulley Muntari.
The Baba Yara Stadium was completely packed out and they got behind the team from start to finish as Ghana were 4-0 winners over Sudan. A result which helped them narrow the gap at the top in Group D to one point behind Zambia.
“It’s been great, a great atmosphere for the win, so we’re really happy,” said Muntari who captained the side before his substitution in the second half when Ghana had raced into a two-nil lead.
For a team that had missed out of the Africa Cup of Nations title two months ago, many were skeptical about the level of support that was going to be on offer for the Black Stars.
But the support was phenomenal as Ghanaian fans showed true class.
“It’s been amazing,” said the AC Milan player. “They’re [fans] always good to us and we’re really happy.”
IMuntari admits that fan support is critical especially in crunch battles.
“Sometimes it gets hard and without them it gets very difficult. So we’re really happy to have great fans like them,” he said.
The difference made by the fans did not go unnoticed as joint statements were made by the Ghana Football Association and the Sports Ministry, thanking them for their role in Ghana's victory.
“On behalf of the Ministry for Youth and Sports, the Ghana Football Association and the players of the Black Stars and the technical team, we want to send our sincere thanks to the people of Ghana for the massive show of support they have offered the team since we began camping,” the GFA's Director of Communications Ibrahim Sannie-Daara said.
“People came out in their numbers to support the team, not only people from Kumasi but from all parts of the country.”
