Women’s Regional Championship Playoff: A Wrap-Up of Match Day One in Group A

The Ghana Football Association's (GFA) Women’s Division Regional Championship Playoff kicked off on Thursday, June 13, 2024, with some interesting fixtures in Group A, Southern Zone.

Beginning the competition, the FC Epiphany Warriors squared off with the Greater Accra Compatriots, the Halifax Queens, in an epic clash. Salamatu Mohammed gave Epiphany the lead in the 17th minute and held on till the break.

After recess, Jennifer Darkwah’s solo effort added a second in the 47th minute before Abigail Akwetey tapped in a cross from the left side to make it three and the final result for the game.

The second game of the day between the Central regional representative, Mfantseman Royals, and the Western region’s Samartex Ladies resulted in an avalanche of goals.

Francesca Eshun opened the floodgate in the 11th minute for the Mfantseman Royals, before Mahmud Salamatu added the second at the 16th minute mark.

Captain Berline Nyarkoh recorded a hat trick, scoring on the 20th, 83rd, and 85th minutes, while Jessica Appiah Asamoah also grabbed a double on the 70th and 75th minutes. Charlotte Antwi got a late consolation for her side in the 88th minute, but it was not enough to overturn the results.

The final game of the day was a thrilling one between Eastern Region’s Rootz Sistaz and Volta Region’s Luta Thunder Ladies, which ended at 2:3.

Both teams went into recess on a level peg, with goals from Joyce Atimbilla in the 8th minute and Ruth Gadri in the 34th minute.

Zuze Anarnh delivered a masterclass for her side, Luta Thunder Ladies, in the 73rd minute, but Iddris Nuratu again pulled parity in the 87th minute.

Luta Thunder left it late through Juliet Abankwa in extra time,  in the 93rd minute, to ensure her side amassed all three points at stake.

FC Epiphany Warriors, Mfantseman Royals, and Luta Thunder thus begin the competition looking promising on match day one.
