Ghana are primed for a place at the first ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with the Black Maidens, two games away from securing a qualifying spot.
Africa’s qualifiers have been narrowed down to six teams with all attempting to pick one of the three places beginning this weekend when the first leg matches of the ultimate round are played.
The Black Maidens would play DR Congo at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra on Saturday with the winner of the two-leg fixture picking one of Africa’s places at the tournament to be hosted by New Zealand from October 30 to November 16, 2008.
Black Maidens coach, Abraham Allotey is confident of Ghana’s chances though he says his team are yet to reach their full potential.
“I am happy with their progress and believe they still have way to go. Their shooting in front of goal needs more precision.
“Despite that, they have what it takes to beat DR Congo tomorrow and set the stage for qualification to the World Cup. We can’t afford to be complacent. We are very sure of our chances,” the Ghana coach says ahead of Saturday’s match.
Ghana reached this stage of the qualifiers after edging out Zambia 6-0 on aggregate.
Saturday’s game would be the first for DR Congo in the qualifying series after drawing bye in the preliminaries following the withdrawal Zimbabwe.
The two-leg tie with DR Congo would determine who seals one of the qualifying places available to the continent at the maiden World Cup.
The other qualifiers on the continent involves the game in Monrovia between Liberia and Nigeria while Cameroon stay at home to play South Africa.
The second leg matches has been fixed for May 16-18.
