Black Queens open Awcon campaign with a win

Ghana has opened the 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nations with a a hard-fought victory over Algeria.

The Black Queens defeated their Algerian counterparts by a lone goal, in a tight opening match of the tournament.

Gladys Amfobea fired in a spectacular goal to give the Queens an early lead, sparking hope of a massive win. But the first goal of the tournament turned out to be the only goal of the match as both sides failed to score despite some good efforts.

With the first three points in the bag, the Queens will now shift their focus on Mali, whom they play next on Tuesday.

The Black Queens are aiming to win their first Awcon trophy at home after several unsuccessful attempts in previous tournaments.

Sherrifatu Sumaila was named the Total woman of the match of the tournament’s opener.
