Sellas Tetteh has vowed to stick to the same Black Satellites squad for the return African Youth Championship qualifier against the Gambia in Banjul in a fortnight.
The national Under-20 coach saw his side rally back from a goal down at the Ohene Djan Stadium to seal a slender 2-1 lead with the winner of the two-leg tie going through to the finals of the competition to be hosted by Rwanda.
And that result left Ghana missing the chance to be in a far more comfortable position of qualification, as Sellas Tetteh reflected on the game.
“We were not at the level we should have been,” he said.
“The first half was not a good performance and I know we could have played much better. If we had clicked in the first half, we would have witnessed a different scoreline. But we have to get back to work.”
Sellas stopped short of naming individuals, but says the ineffectual display by captain Ransford Osei contributed to Ghana’s underperformance in the opening half.
"Osei's inability to click affected our game plan," Sellas Tetteh said in a post game interview.
Ransford Osei struggled in the opening session and capped his day before his substitution during recess with a penalty miss in the 44th minute that could have put Ghana on level terms with the Gambia.
However, two second half goals from Rabiu Mohammed and Samuel Inkoom hands Ghana a slender advantage ahead of the second leg qualifier in Banjul.
Despite having failed to make the most of the home advantage, Sellas Tetteh is confident his side can still qualify for the Championship.
The Black Satellites have missed out of the last editions of the African Youth Championship.
But Sellas adds that his side would fight for a respectable result to qualify.
"We are going back to the drawing board to correct our mistakes and make sure we deliver".
Moments after the final whistle, the Gambians were in a jubilant mood as they anticipate a win at home when the two sides play the second leg game which would determine who goes through to the finals.
But Sellas Tetteh, who was happy with the manner his side fought back in the second half to win after the Gambians had taken a first half lead through Paul Jaitia believes the pressure would be on the Young Scorpions in Banjul.
Africa’s qualifying series has now been narrowed down to 14 sides after July’s first round of qualifiers.
Seven teams would qualify over a two-leg fixture for the Championship to be hosted by Rwanda in 2009.
Ghana plays Gambia in Banjul in a fortnight with the winner over the two-leg fixture going through to the finals.
